Alva Zalar (she/her) is a PhD candidate at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment (LTH) and the interdisciplinary graduate school Agenda 2030 at Lund University. Her ongoing PhD studies focuses on eco-modernist sustainable development as a paradigmatic discourse in contemporary architecture, urban planning and urban design. Hyllie, one of Malmö’s biggest urban development projects, is used as an empirical case to study so-called ‘sustainable urban development’ across scales – from strategic visions to the materialities of everyday life. The research aims to formulate a queer approach equipped to understand how planning and architecture produces coherent ‘sustainability orders’, and to explore if practice can be (re)wired to better support the incoherent multiplicity of everyday life in cities. The heterogeneity of everyday life is also connected to the many possibilities for alternative sustainability visions which are currently marginalized and unsupported, situated outside the scope of pragmatic realism.
